Should be much better

First off, Misleading photo above - set-ups only viewable in plan view makes understanding light/camera positions difficult. Second, not really enough room on the seamless to represent many setups. For the functionality/interface quality, this app should be free or $.99 max.

Cool idea but doesnt work!

Cant change light direction or rotate, flimsy navigation. Cool idea that failed miserably.

Very useful app

One thing, cannot get final view in lens mode, it shows real light only for each selected source but not for all

=========== A good program for the development of skills to light. Put 5 for a good initiative, I hope that idea will grow into a full tutorial on working with light sources. It would be desirable to have the opportunity to work with different objects and to construct portraits of working with good, "gypsum", not "little men". Not enough, and output to a file image from the camera. In general, the iPad program works quickly, the entire screen, albeit with "teeth" at the facilities. Waiting for updates.

The best one at the moment

Though rendered images you get are not so smooth as Id like them to be, this app gives you a great possibility to plan your shooting before the actual one and save your time! Great for apprentices and beginners: you get into the nature of lighting by seeing real time changes while setting up different schemes - very useful. P.s. Id love to see better rendered images and have the possibility to adjust power level of flash bulbs (now it is the same for each light source). Also the controls are tricky...(

The idea was good but...

If this was free could be one of the best app in the store but : no info about distance and degrees of light subject and camera no chance of stopping the subject ...for 3 euros... Absolutely not a good app

Please update asap!!!! See suggestions!!!

I agree with Pino72. Please add: 1. Distances 2. Degrees 3. lock/unlock option for the gear 4. quick view buttons (left/front/right/top/zoom in/zoom out). The navigation is not easy..its very annoying!!! I would replace it with a directional pad, so much time spent trying to go around the subject!!!! Also when you try to move around the set it always happen that you heat an item accidentaly and you move it on the other side of the room ( lock/unlock gear option would be great!!!! ) 5. Power indicator for the light sources. Maybe add numbers to the light gears so they can be found quickly in the notes..or colors 6. I would add big bounce reflectors.. example: the reflectors now are to small for a full body shot 7. Add the option to remove the background paper and add objects..walls..cubes..parallelepipeds..etc 8.Add the option to raise the subject ( you may wish to place it on top of an objects for example..a cube..) 9. Add the sun!!! ..a directional sun like the gear... You may want to consider shooting outside and use some gear too..the background has to go away. 10. Add vertical control for all the gear. 11. Add bigger gear!! Add different size softbox for example..add more lighting equipment..check at the different brands equipments... Please update soon if you want this app to become one of the most used app by pro photograhers. As it is now its a waste of money but a good idea. Please keep working on it! Thanks

Needs an update

Please update the view positioning... This is difficult... Add color to lights Add top view map for sharing

Very difficult

Its nice that its 3D but it hard to navigate, back to front view button will be great (reset view)... We only need a zoom an move to sides option why do I need to see a view from top corner of the room?!! If people saying this app is good then u are far from being a professional, u would check set.a.light desktop software...

Very nice start.

I was & still am very excited about this app...I change my studio lighting around regularly & this helps me keep track of my fav setups, plus I visit a couple friends with studios & this app allows me to "steal" their setup & tweak it when I get back to my studio. I cant wait to see more features like: 1. The ability to note what the kits are metered at in the setup. 2. The ability to note what the camera flash is metered at (if used) & camera manual settings for best exposure. 3. The ability to move the view angle 360 degrees instead of just up & down while editing. 4. The coolest feature would be the ability to attach an example photo to each setup, to show a shot of a model from that setup or an actual photo of the setup! Conclusion: Very nice start...but a bit expensive for current features.

Nice Application

I think this is a great app. the only thing I would add is the ability to view from the floor angle like your were standing looking toward the set up not from above. That would give you a better angle to see the relitive height of the softbox etc in respect to the other items. Was it raised higher or lower than the reflector etc just like you were standing there. With that I think it would be a perfect app. Great start. Cant wait for other updates.

Good start

Im excited to see where this goes. The current version is quite basic but it has a lot of potential. I think development needs to include: 1) light intensity control 2) lighting on background 3) calculated/rendered shadows 4) more set viewing options, not just from the top. A two finger input would allow pitch control (like google earth) 5) ideally each light would include ws ratings so that you could add lights of differing power and preferably with modifiers that had an indication of loss like -1 stop, etc. I think the bottom line is that to be more than just a light diagram app, like Strobox, a real rendering engine needs to be included that would accurately show shadows on the set, background lighting, etc.

Photographer

Great start. I would love to have the man stop spinning and place him in the direction I would like to view the lighting effects.

Good, but could be great with a few more tweaks.

This is one step away from really being a fantastic product. Here are my recommendations to the programmers: Make the "modeling light" into a "view" or "preview". Allow us to position the model. Even better, give us options for a couple of more realisticaly rendered models. Make the model stop spinnning! The perspective should remain static from the cameras perspective. Give us a better visual cue when a light is selected. Sometimes I go to move a light and another one moves instead. The lights should glow when selected or give some other kind of visual cue. If those items are changed Ill gladly return and issue it 5 stars!

Disapointed

This app looked promising and was pomomted by estimed photografer David Hobby on his strobist blog. I feel sorry this is a ripoff. Not cool.

Interesting but not really that useful for me

This app is probably most useful to photogs just starting out or those without a lot of studio experience or for just documenting your setup. But it is not a replacement for understanding the quality of the light you are using or how your particular studio and light forming tools influences light. A good start nonetheless and maybe this app will evolve. What would be cool from a look and feel aspect would be a more "cocktail napkin" look and the ability to change the size of the various light shaping tools and to be able to turn on multiple light sources instead of just one (or did I not figure that out?) The giant mono blocs on each light are not necessary, just show me the shaping tool and please add: Large beauty dish Giant umbrella Globe Grids for reflectors Strip light Open tube strobe Ring flash Gobos Objects: Car Motorcycle etc. Anatomically correct male and female model with different sizes and the ability to place one or more (think lighting for groups) Also there is no coffee machine or minibar in the corner of the studio!

Slow and sluggish

I thought this would help me design my lighting, but its not worth it. the 360 mode is slow and tough to control. Loading a previously saved setup takes forever and Im overall not impressed. Save your money.

I represent blacktagmedia

Ok so I dont know what else is supposedly needed to be bought? I purchased the app and I am overlY impressed by the application. Its runs smoove for me on my iPad and I can not complain because it gives a nice concept of lighting set ups before having to be physically be within the studio. Worth the money ample amount of save slots in the library. Great app one of a kind! And if there happens to be any updates soon I believe for a fact they will make the program better.

Incredible Lighting and Rigging tool!

There are many 3D programs out there, from Maya to LightWave for animators to do Hollywood production - this is the app Ive been asking forever - a clean, fast, intuitive interface with a solid, quick engine hidden beneath to manipulate lights and figures in 3D as easily as using gestures and the tools contained in SLR. This is truly a world-class app in its design and implementation. Plus its immediate results with live open gl type live rendering makes this a 10 star app. Kudos to all - it will be recommended to everyone I know in the film, television and photography industries. Id love to see blue-screen backgrounds imported, quicktime files and such to use in doing pre-viz for film production. Amazing and wonderful as well as a heck of a lot of fun - kids will love this as much as choreographers, directors, photographers, set designers and a host of others. Absolutely fantastic!!! Great idea. Terrible execution.

An app like this is a fantastic idea and something like this is very useful. But the usability of this particular app is so nonsensical and unintuitive as to make it too cumbersome to be of much use. Select one button to enable moving an item. Select a different button to enable pointing it. A slider to change the items height. Select another button to enable rotating the model. Changing perspective works in a bizarre inverted manner. Accidentally having multiple buttons selected results in unpredictable behavior when touching and moving on the screen. Here is how an app like this should work: - Touch an item to select it. - Once selected, touch and hold the item to move it. - Touch and move the line pointing out of the item to change its direction. - Two-finger touch and move to change the items height. - Touch and move any point in the studio to drag that point around with the finger, changing perspective. This would get rid of the horrid button selecting/deselecting to switch between different types of movement. Ill try it some more and see if I can still make use of it. But as it is now, it is too many taps, too much time, and too unintuitive.
